What is a trade journal score?
A trade journal score is a number that grades how well you executed your process — following your plan, respecting your stops, sizing correctly — rather than how much money the trade made. It measures the decisions you control, not the outcome the market handed you.
Definition
P&L is a terrible discipline metric: it rewards a lucky rule break and punishes a disciplined loss. A journal score fixes that by measuring behavior directly — rule-compliance rate, the share of trades that followed a plan, the quality of entries, stops, and exits — and rolling it into one figure you can watch move week to week. Because it tracks process, it can rise on a red day and fall on a green one, which is exactly what makes it useful.
The inputs are self-reported. You grade whether you entered at the trigger, held the stop, and followed the exit rule; the score composes those honest grades. It is a mirror, not a surveillance tool — its accuracy depends on you being straight with yourself, and its value is that it gives discipline a number to chase.
Why it matters
A number that rewards discipline directly
Discipline decays when the only feedback is money, because money lags behavior by a sample size. A process score closes that gap: it responds the same session you tighten an entry or hold a stop, so good behavior gets reinforced immediately instead of waiting for the P&L to agree. Watching the number climb is the feedback loop that makes consistency self-reinforcing.
In Mettle this is the BRI score — Behavior, Risk, Income — shown as the dashboard hero. It rises as you follow your plan, respect your risk rules, and review your sessions, built from the behavioral tags and grades on each trade. It is a headline that rewards how you traded, not just whether the market cooperated.
Example
A green week that should lower the score
Five sessions, all profitable, but the tags show oversizing after losses and three trades taken with no plan. The P&L says great week; a process score says otherwise and drops — correctly. Judged by money, the week trains bad habits. Judged by the score, it flags the exact behaviors to fix before variance stops being kind.
