What is trade execution?

Trade execution is the act of turning a trading decision into filled orders — your entry, your stop, and your exit — and, for a trader working on their game, how closely each one matched the plan you set beforehand.

Definition

The word carries two senses. In the mechanical sense, execution is order routing and the fill: how fast the order reaches the market and what price you actually get versus the price you saw. In the trader-development sense — the one that matters for getting better — execution is how faithfully you carried out your own plan: did you enter at the trigger or chase it, did you place the stop where the plan said and leave it there, did you exit on your rule or on your nerves.

A clean setup and a good outcome can still hide poor execution, and a perfectly executed trade can still lose. Separating execution from the other two parts of a trade — the quality of the setup and the outcome the market handed you — is what lets you improve the one part that is entirely yours.

Why it matters

Execution is the part you actually control

You do not control where price goes, and you only partly control which setups appear. You fully control how you execute — and that is exactly where most edge leaks out. A trader with a profitable plan can lose for months purely on execution: entering early, widening stops, cutting winners, sizing up after a loss.

Because execution is controllable, it is also coachable — but only if you measure it apart from P&L. In Mettle you grade each trade on entry timing, stop discipline, exit discipline, and sizing; those grades are self-reported, which is the point — only you know what your plan was. Over a sample they show whether your results come from your decisions or from variance.

Example

Same setup, two executions

Two traders take the identical breakout-retest. One waits for the retest to hold, enters at the trigger, sets the stop under the level, and lets it run to target. The other sees the move, hesitates, then chases two points late with an improvised stop. The setup was the same; the execution was not. Graded honestly, the first trade is an A whether it won or lost — and that is the grade worth chasing.
